What is the Youth Basketball League?

The City of Ukiah offers a recreational basketball league for boys and girls in grades K-12. This league is non-competitive and designed to encourage participation and develop basketball skills while helping children learn to respect others, to practice sportsmanship, and to accept both winning and losing gracefully. The league is recreational and no league standings are kept (except for high school).

Who can participate in the Youth Basketball League?
The league is open to girls and boys in grades K-12. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited and the league is filled on a first come, first serve basis.

How do I register?
Registration for the league begins after Labor Day each year. Registration forms are available at the Recreation Department located at 411 West Clay St. and online at www.cityofukiah.com. Registration can be completed ONLINE for easy access. Forms are also distributed to all of the schools in the Ukiah area, as well as all schools in Willits, Potter Valley and Anderson Valley.

Registration is taken on a first come, first serve basis as space is limited in the league. Registration forms may be mailed in, completed ONLINE, or hand delivered to the Recreation Department.

How do I know if I qualify for the Low-Income Discounts?
Applications can be found at the Recreation Office at 411 West Clay Street in Ukiah. Low-Income residents of Mendocino County will be eligible for partial fee subsidies depending upon income and fund availability. Each eligible application will receive up to a 75% subsidy. Applications must be filled out one week in advance and must include copies of your Federal Income Tax Return and any proof of income. Upon approval, the City of Ukiah will contact you. All remaining fees must be payed before registration deadline or the application will be voided.

When does the league take place?
The league runs each year from December through the middle of March. Practices are held on weekday evenings (starting in December) and games are held on weekends (starting in January). Both practices and games are one hour each. Registration begins after Labor Day and forms are accepted through end of October.

How are teams formed?
Boys and girls are divided into the following divisions: K-1, 2&3, 4&5, 6-8 and High School. On the registration form, players may request to be placed with a specific coach or with another player (NOT GUARANTEED). Coaches are allowed to request up to four players (INCLUDING CHILD) on their coaching form. There is also a designated space on the registration form where the participant indicates which school the child attends. Due to the large number of players, limited facility access and the availability of individual coaches, all needs simply cannot be met for each child. We cannot guarantee that your child will be placed on a specific team, with a specific player or coach, or in a specific area. Coaches are given rosters at the Coaches Meeting in November and asked to contact their players to inform them of practice and game sites, times, and locations.

Who are the coaches, referees and scorekeepers?
All coaches are volunteers, 18 years of age or older, and must go through a background check before being selected to participate as a coach. Coaches may be parents or other adults who are interested in coaching basketball. The referee and scorekeepers must be 15 years of age or older and must complete all pre-employment testing.

Where are the games and practices held?
Games are played at Yokayo Elementary School, Pomolita Middle School, Eagle Peak Middle School, Ukiah High School, and the Alex Rorabaugh Center Gym. Practices are held at game sites or at a number of other schools in Ukiah. Out of town teams such as Anderson Valley, Willits, or Laytonville most likely practice in their own home town. Practices and games may be held at locations other than the school a child attends. Availability of coaches and gym space determines practice locations and times. We cannot arrange for your child to be at a particular location or time for practices or games.

What about uniforms and equipment?
Each player will be given a reversible team jersey with the sponsor name and number on the back. The league also provides two basketballs to each team. The league does NOT provide the appropriate basketball attire (shoes, socks, shorts).

The Youth Basketball Shoot-A-Thon is an event held to raise money for the program. The pledges collected will be used towards funding staff, keeping registration fees at a low/affordable rate, and providing new equipment. Each player has a goal to raise at least $20, but the sky is the limit! Players will have the opportunity to make as many free throws out of 20 and anyone can sponsor per basket made (i.e. $1.00 per shot) or a flat rate (i.e. $20.00). Players then have 2 weeks to collect money from their pledges and turn into the Recreation Office at 411 West Clay Street in Ukiah to claim their prize. Great prizes will be available!
