PumpkinFest 2021

Pumpkinfest History

The grandparents of the mighty “Country Pumpkinfest”, were two transplanted Half Moon Bay residents, Harry and Shirley Botham who had retired in Ukiah.  They knew the potential of a pumpkin festival, watching Half Moon Bay go from a small event to a state-wide affair.  The Bothams had visions of pumpkin grandeur for Ukiah.  In 1993 the first pumpkin festival was a half-day event held on Safeway’s parking lot.  It was a lot of fun with huge potential.  Judy Pruden, member of the pumpkinfest steering committee, worked on the first festival and was sold on pumpkin potential for Ukiah.  She took the idea forward to former Ukiah City Manager Candace Horsley and former Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth Brazil, who soon had visions of pumpkin grandeur of their own.  With the help and commitment from the City of Ukiah and Ukiah Chamber of Commerce, the first official Ukiah Country Pumpkinfest kicked off with the 1994 weigh-off, with more than 60 entries!  The official logo was adopted in 1996 and the festival had its first original posters and coloring contest.  The Savings Bank of Mendocino County got Scarecrow City up and running that same year.  In 1997, the parade chose a theme for the first time.

The 2021 Ukiah Country PumpkinFest will be held on Saturday, October 16th from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday, October 17th from 10am- 4pm in beautiful downtown Ukiah. The theme this year is “Steam Punk Pumpkins.”
Along with a variety of delicious foods, the streets of Downtown Ukiah are filled with craft vendors, art exhibits, and the Scout-O-Rama at the Plaza.
You can enjoy live music at the Beer and Wine Garden, ride the Ferris Wheel, or enter into the Pumpkin Baking Contest!
There will be performances and competitions at the Better Homes and Gardens Children’s Stage.
This year will also feature the Fire and Safety Expo with an appearance by Smokey the Bear.
More information about entering the Parade, Baking Contest, Dog Races/ Pet Costume Contest, is available below.
⚖️ The Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off, sponsored by Flow Kana, will take place Friday, October 15 from 4pm-7pm at the Plaza. There will be cash prizes for the top 10 pumpkins including $1.50/ pound for the winner.
✅ Safety Measures: this year, PumpkinFest is 100% outdoors. The Haunted House will take place at Riverside Park and be set up as a one-way walk through haunted forest (Escape From Oz). Many “high touch” components will not be featured this year including bounce houses, climbing walls and bubble balls.
✅ There will be a Vaccination and Testing station this year, coordinated and staffed by Mendocino County Public Health. The station will be directly in front of the Conference Center.
The PumpkinFest Parade will take place at 10am on Saturday, October 16. The parade route will start at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds and proceed south on State St. past the Plaza. Entry forms are posted below.
