Over the last few years, the Ukiah Police Department has experienced an increasing number of gang related criminal investigations. Along with this trend, the department has seen a steady increase in the number of these investigations which are considered felony weapons and felony assault type events.
Along with the recent designation of a full-time Gang Enforcement Officer, the department has begun to actively participate in gang prevention activities to reduce the number of children who become involved within the criminal gang culture. The Ukiah Gang Resistance Is Paramount program is a nationally recognized anti-gang program that steers children away from gangs through classroom lessons, counseling and parental training. Studies have shown that 90% of the kids who have completed the Grip program have a negative attitude about gangs or have stayed out of them.
Department Personnel are active participates of the Ukiah Area Gang Coalition, the Gang Resistance is Paramount Program, the GRIP Action Team, the Ukiah Area Boys and Girls Club, and the Mendocino and Sonoma County Gang Investigation Associations.
