About the Investigations Division | The Ukiah Police Department Investigations Bureau is comprised of four detectives, one sergeant, one narcotics agent, one school resource officer and one part time property officer. This division is tasked with investigating major crimes, including homicide, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, fraud (identity theft, internet scams, forgery, credit card theft, etc.) criminal street gangs, elder abuse, child abuse, arson, acts of terrorism and missing persons cases. The public number for the investigations bureau is (707) 463-6241. Investigators are assigned cases based on major offense categories such as property crimes, sexual assault and fraud. Each detective has received advanced training in their area of expertise and all investigators receive on-going cross training to enable them to provide a higher level of service to the community. |  |
Major Crimes | The Investigations unit works as a team on all major crimes such as homicide, gang violence and robberies. |  |
Narcotics Cases | The police department conducts the majority of its narcotics investigation through their partnership in the Mendocino County Major Crimes Task Force (MCMTF). A supervisor from the State Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (BNE) oversees Task Force operations. Sexual Assault | The Investigations Division reviews and actively conducts follow-up investigations on all reported sexual assault cases. These cases are given a high priority and a specially trained detective is assigned to work on each case. We work to in partnership with Project Sanctuary, the District Attorney's Office of Victim Witness Assistance and Ukiah Valley Medical Center. |  |
Criminal Street Gangs | The Investigations Division actively pursues reports of criminal street gang activity. We work closely with other local law enforcement agencies including the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, Office of the District Attorney, Mendocino County Probation Department and California State Parole in monitoring known gang members and enforcing State Laws. Detectives also work in partnership with the multi agency Gang Suppression Unit (MAGSU), Major Crimes Task Force, and Sonoma County Gang Enforcement Team (Magnet) to address gang problems in this area. Detectives meet regularly with the Community Coalition for Gang Prevention (CCGP) to share information and discuss concerns. Ukiah Police Department staff is also actively involved in the gang prevention element by supporting the GRIP program (Gang Resistance is Paramount) in our local schools. |  |
Missing Persons | All missing persons cases reported within the City of Ukiah are referred to the Investigations Division for follow up. The highest priority is placed on missing children and endangered missing adults. Detectives also track runaway juveniles. Detectives work closely with surrounding law enforcement agencies as well as the California Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Internet links are listed below. A special FBI task force will assist Ukiah Police Department with critical missing children cases. If you wish to report a missing person contact your local law enforcement agency (Police or Sheriff). Fraud/Identity Theft | One of the fastest growing types of crime in California is fraud and identity theft. The Ukiah Police Department actively investigates violations of the state penal code involving fraud and identity theft. Investigators work closely with allied agencies including a specialized unit located in Napa, California, the Northern California Computer Crimes Task Force (NCCCTF) assists local law enforcement with investigations involving computer/internet fraud, identity theft, child pornography and other crimes where a computer is used. (Web links listed below) Detectives handle a variety of financial crime investigations including bad checks, forgeries, counterfeiting, elder abuse, embezzlements and grand thefts. Our unit also provides training on crime prevention and investigative steps to local businesses, the banking industry and community groups/organizations. Child Abuse/Elder Abuse | Detectives receive advanced training prior to handling these types of cases. We work in partnership with the Mendocino County Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services Units. Detectives also work with the State Department of Justice, Community Care Licensing, Ombudsmen Office and the Adult Protective Service Multi Disciplinary Team (APS/MDT) to assist with senior victims of crime. |  |
