The Ukiah Police Crime Suppression Team serves as a support unit to the department's patrol, investigation, and administrative divisions, concentrating primarily on quality of life issues and community problems with a proactive approach to street level crime and gang enforcement. The unit is comprised of a sergeant and a team of officers, all of whom have separate duties and responsibilities within the department, but who are aligned and dedicated to combating street level crime within Ukiah.
The unit's full time gang investigator is committed to reducing crime associated with criminal street gangs by: - Actively identifying gang members and associates
- Cooperating with probation and parole officers to monitor gang members on supervised release
- Conducting focused and aggressive enforcement targeting active and violent gang members
- Providing expert testimony in court to facilitate substantial penalties for violent gang offenders
The department's School Resource Office is a member of the Crime Suppression Team, and spends a large portion of time assigned to the Ukiah High School. The SRO is also responsible for law enforcement functions at the Pomolita Middle School, and is committed to reducing school violence by:
- Interacting with students on a daily basis
- Educating students on alternatives to gangs and violence
- Taking enforcement as necessary on observed and reported law violations occurring on school campuses
The department participates in the Mendocino Major Crimes Task Force for the majority of its narcotics related cases. The Ukiah Police Officer assigned to the Task Force, in partnership with personnel from other county and state law enforcement agencies, conducts mainly large-scale narcotics investigations in Ukiah and throughout Mendocino County. This officer works closely with members of the Crime Suppression Team, sharing information and manpower, to further each unit's mission.
A sergeant and officer assigned to the Crime Suppression Team are responsible for coordinating training to all Ukiah Police personnel. The sergeant oversees all personnel and operations related the team's activities, and serves as a contact for the public and liaison to other agencies to further the team's objective of using conventional and non-conventional methods to eradicate petty and serious crime within Ukiah.
