Big pumpkins are exciting! They are fun to look at and they make wonderful jack-o'-lanterns. Len Stellpflog (well known in pumpkin circles) suggests carved big pumpkins last longer if you stand them on the stem end. This is due to the stem end being approximately twice the thickness of the opposite end. When the heavier end is up, they collapse in about a week, especially if broad areas have been carved away. Howard Dill of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada started the strain of seeds known as The Atlantic Giant. By 1979 the world was beginning to pay attention to these giants and today many of the world's top growers are women. The giant pumpkins ranged from 963 lbs. to 887.5 lbs.! All computer buffs will be happy to know that a pumpkin web site has been installed on the World Wide Web. To access all the information and news about giant pumpkins, go to http://www.giantpumpkins.com Prizes are awarded as follows: First: $1 per pound Second: $300.00 Third: $200.00 Fourth: $150.00 Fifth: $100.00 Sixth-Tenth: $80.00 each Eleventh-Fifteenth: $70.00 each Largest Greenie: $50.00 Ugliest: $25.00
