General Municipal Election
The City of Ukiah’s next municipal election will be held on November 3, 2020. Currently there are three positions open: Two City Councilmembers seats, and One City Treasurer seat.
You can register to vote online or at one of several civic locations: the Office of the County Clerk, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices, and libraries. You may also call the County Clerk’s Election line at 707-234-6819 to have a voter registration form sent to you.
Candidate Nomination Period
The candidate nomination period is scheduled to begin July 13 – August 7, 2020. All candidates running for office in the November 3, 2020, General Municipal Election must complete all required paperwork and have it turned in to the City Clerk’s office by 5:00 p.m. on August 7, 2020. Nomination papers are available from the City Clerk Department by calling 707-463-6217, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Mayor is appointed every year on a rotational basis by the City Council.
- Council Members: Four (4) years, elected by the voters. If a Council Member resigns their seat, the City Council will decide whether to appoint a new person to serve the remainder of the term, leave the seat vacant until the next scheduled election, or hold a special election to fill the seat.
- The three terms of office up for election are for the period December 1, 2020 through November 30, 2024.
- Election to the office of City Council requires a 50% + 1 majority vote threshold.
First and third Wednesdays of each month at 6 pm, as well as other special meetings, as scheduled. Council Members also sit on various Boards and Commissions throughout the community on behalf of the City of Ukiah.
In order to be eligible to hold office as a member of the City Council, a candidate must be a registered voter within the corporate limits of the City of Ukiah at the time nomination documents are issued by the City Clerk. An eligible voter in the City of Ukiah must be an American citizen, 18 years of age or older, and a resident of the City. If you meet these requirements but are not a registered voter of the City, the City Clerk can provide you a voter registration form at the time you request nomination documents. (Government Code Sections 34882, 34904, 36502).

The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) provides free, expert advice at their toll free number: (866) ASK FPPC (275-3772). All campaign forms, most manuals, and instructions are available on their website.
Measures on Ballot
The Candidate Information is provided to all candidates to assist them with the nomination and campaign process. A hard copy will be provided to all candidates by the City Clerk upon issuing in lieu of petition forms or nomination papers.

Questions & Resources
The City Code provides for a $490 per month salary for the Mayor and Councilmembers (Municipal Code §62).
Council Members are eligible for a medical allowance of $723 per month (equivalent to the Anthem Blue Cross EPO $250 employee only premium) toward the City’s health care provider. This allowance is provided towards City health plans only.
